Ever heard about a tubeless tyre for that? A type of tire that is not like many regular tires, because it does have a tube inside-like the old days. For a normal tire, there is an inner tube that holds all compressed air needed to ride the bike but instead of using that this type of rider had sealed the edge tightly around. So when air is pumped into the tire, it simply inflates to take on its round shape without a tube inside.
Both of these characteristics are improvements over using a tube. They provide a great advantage in that they are more difficult to puncture. That is mainly because it places no internal tube to form a work. When you rollover something sharp such a nail or a thorn it is less likely to puncture the tire. Tubeless also have a lower rolling resistance, which means that if you use them, it is easier to pedal. It allows you to push with less effort and therefore go faster, which is what cycling should be all about.
